Privacy

Privacy, explained clearly.

Azan Bilal is a nonprofit app that helps worshippers find and follow nearby mosques, view adhan and iqama prayer times, receive prayer reminders, and find the Qibla direction. We respect your privacy and collect as little data as possible. No account is required to use the app.

Information we handle

Location

Your device location, when you grant permission, is used on-device to show mosques near you, compute the Qibla direction, and calculate approximate prayer times when you are not following a mosque. Your coordinates are sent to our server only as a transient search query to fetch the nearby mosque list. They are not stored in a user profile or the app database and are not joined to the anonymous identifier, but hosting infrastructure may retain standard access and security logs. The map view connects to OpenStreetMap servers, which may receive the network address and map-tile requests. We do not use this data for tracking or advertising.

Anonymous installation identifier

After onboarding, the app registers an anonymous subscriber using a random installation identifier, even if you do not follow a mosque. Registration is retried on startup or resume when needed. This record stores your mosque follows and notification history, and can also contain your device's platform and push token for notification delivery. Registration can occur without notification permission so you can read messages in the app's inbox. It does not contain your name, email, or account details.

Push notifications

The app uses Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging and, on Apple devices, Apple Push Notification service to deliver updates from mosques you follow and messages from Azan Bilal administrators. Administrators can send messages to all registered app installations or to installations following at least one mosque. Firebase uses installation identifiers and registration tokens for delivery; the app sends its push token to our server with your subscriber record and refreshes it when it changes. These identifiers are used for app functionality, not advertising or tracking. Invalid delivery tokens are removed. If you allow notifications in your device settings, alerts can appear while the app is open or in the background. Notification history lets you open the full message in the app.

Prayer reminders

Adhan and iqama reminders are scheduled locally on your device from cached prayer times and work offline. No personal data is sent to our servers for these reminders.

Optional feedback

If you choose to send survey feedback, we store your rating and optional comment with the anonymous installation identifier, platform, app version, submission time, and review status. Your comment may include a name or contact details only if you choose to provide them; CentralAdmin reviewers can read what you submit. We do not automatically collect contact details through the survey.

Error and crash diagnostics

We use Sentry, with this project's data stored in the European Union, to diagnose errors and crashes in the app, mosque display software and web services. Reports may include technical stack traces, app version, operating system, device model and crash/session identifiers. We disable screenshots, session replay, request bodies and log breadcrumbs, and filter common sensitive values from exception messages. We do not intentionally include your account details, passwords, verification codes, push tokens, notification content or precise location in these reports. Diagnostic data is used to improve reliability, not for advertising or cross-app tracking. The service provider receives network connection information when a report is transmitted.

What we do not do

  • No ads, advertising analytics or cross-app tracking. Sentry is used for technical error and crash diagnostics.
  • We do not sell or share your data for marketing.
  • No account or sign-in is required to use the app.

Security and data sharing

Communication with our server and diagnostic service uses encrypted connections (HTTPS). We use hosting providers to operate the service, Firebase and Apple to deliver notifications, and Sentry for technical diagnostics. Mosque maps are rendered using OpenStreetMap.

Your choices

You can revoke location and notification permissions in your operating-system settings at any time and unfollow mosques inside the app. Unfollowing all mosques does not remove your anonymous subscriber or prevent messages addressed to all users from appearing in the inbox. To delete the anonymous subscriber tied to your device, or for any privacy question, email us below.

Children

The app is directed at a general audience and does not knowingly collect data from children.
